In bed with Designers at the Mini Hotel Causeway Bay saw a brand new and exciting Hong Kong design event. A buzzing hot bed of design and creativity was created that saw designers, design lovers and other enthusiasts drawn to an unconventional Hong Kong design event at the boutique hotel.
For one weekend only, three floors of the Mini Hotel were taken over by designers as they displayed, showcased and curated their works for all to see. The celebration of design let the people of Hong Kong get up close and personal with designers and their creations. They could look, feel, and touch the products, have their questions answered by designers, even jump into bed with them.
As buyMeDesign founder, Florence Giraudon, expressed, the event was borne out of passion for emerging designers. “BuyMeDesign is all about supporting emerging designers and this is the perfect platform to do it – it’s a physical representation of what we do every day online” she said. 50 carefully curated designers from over 10 different countries showcased their products: including fashion, accessories, furniture, lighting, and travel goods.
This included, Hubert Verstraeten who bought his range of Bakelite accessories and his brand Tamawa. Beautiful hand-made oriental furniture from Pinwu was also showcased in one of the Boutique rooms. Boris Design Studio‘s original and intriguing home decoration and lighting was on offer. Chailie Ho from Hong Kong bought along her beautiful pieces of city inspired art and fashion. Eco friendly mixed with sexy utilitarianism fashion was showcased by Wan & Wong. Jasbir Sandhu showed off her range of striking map jewelry created in refined metal.
The Saturday night saw a real festival of innovation and creativity with the Design Night hosted in Hotel’s intimate and chic lobby, where buyMeDesigns own boutique has begun its residence. A Design Talk tackled the question of “What is Curation in Asia” and saw a cross-section of the design industry thrash out their ideas on design curation.
The speakers included industrial designer Michael Young, the owner of Kapok design stores in Hong Kong, Arnault Castel; Hong Kong fashion writer and blogger Daniel Kong and Lise Coirier – the founder and editor-in-chief of TL Magazine. The evening came to a close with a bespoke PechaKucha Night organized by ChowPourianLab.
The Hong Kong design event created an inspiring atmosphere not just for guests but also for designers. “I like the whole concept. Exhibiting in a hotel is a unique experience and I’m really excited and proud to participate and to meet other great designers and guests.” Said Manchuen Hui of Koncept.
Adrian Yim, a local architect said that the Hong Kong design event was “casual and creative, the boutique hotel was the perfect setting. I left feeling inspired.” buyMeDesign would like to thank all those who took part and we are most certainly looking forward to the next time we can all jump into bed together.
