We are excited for the appearance of La Boite Concept with their Hi-Fi furniture at In bed With Designers Taipei next week. They will be bringing their unique hi-fi sound system furniture design to VVG in Taipei for the third edition of our boutique designer sleepover from October 8 – 12. We caught up with the French designers to find out more about their design perspective and why they’re excited for the event.
Why are you participating in this year’s In Bed with Designers? In your opinion, what sets this event apart?
It is the first major design event La Boite concept do in Asia! We are very excited to present the LD Series in Taiwan for the first time thanks to the initiative of our local partner Reun. During the show, we will also present for the first time in the whole of Asia, the LD Cube, the fruit of our collaboration with the French designer Samuel Accoceberry.
We feel like In Bed with Designers quickly became one of the major events in design, interior design and lifestyle in Asia. Especially thanks to the support of BuyMeDesign and all its partners. Much more than in Europe, Asian people are found of the mix of design and technology – which is typically our target – and we observe such a great interest and demand from them since the inception of La Boite concept in 2010.
It is vital for us to meet our future retailers directly, interior designer partners, and early adopters by attending the right events, just like we do here back in France at Maison & Objet in Paris. When we looked at the people attending the event it became a no-brainer, especially when you look at the quality of the products and brands exhibited.
What makes your designs different and unique?
I love looking at the way people use their furniture, what is it designed for and, of course, the way they play music at home. We often go to our friends’ places and to their friends for observing how new objects (such as laptops, tablet computer, smartphones) are integrated into their way of life and into their daily use. This is how I noticed the gap and how I got inspired for the LD. We noticed that even though the laptop is the main device used for playing music at home, just a few resellers know how to re-direct their customers to a complete and optimized laptop sound system adapted to their needs. Oh and we also noticed that the main spots of our laptop use at home, occurs on our couch or chair! The idea of the product naturally came and the concept was born. That’s how we started writing down the specifications with the team.
Why did you choose the path of ‘electro-acoustics’ as opposed to other forms of technology or design?
My grandmother always told me not to work in this sector of activity since it entered in a crisis back in the 80s. That’s why I’ve always considered the world of Hi-Fi as a passion and not as a job. It’s only when I started working that we have decided (my grandmother, my father and my brother, 3 generations of my family, with the brand “SIARE®”) to go back into the audio market so we could create a product adapted to the numeric revolution of data. Computers became the main source of music but the manufacturers never thought of a speaker optimized for it. There was a niche and I wanted to take on this challenge. It may sounds cliché but it feels like electro-acoustics is in my DNA and I truly wanted to follow the path my grandmother took a few decades ago.
What brought about the idea to apply sub woofers to furniture?
When we started working on the LD Series project, one of the specifications was to include all the traditional elements of high-end Hi-Fi systems. Amplifiers, DAC converters, speakers and a subwoofer had to be there. We also worked on the Wide Sound®, a patent we own thanks to our laboratory in France so we can use the sound reflection in order to have an immersive sound wherever you are standing in the room. Although, what is important to point out is that we wanted to create a functional object that became a piece of furniture later on. No compromises on the sound quality have been made when we created the LD Series. We are a Hi-Fi manufacturer after all.
Do you have any future plans of collaboration?
We will only release the LD Cube with Samuel Accoceberry through our Taiwanese distributor Reun. We will dig deeper in the coffee table-sized market since we had such an amazing response for this product so far in France. Samuel (Designer of the year 2014 in France according to GQ magazine) and I are on the same page and it is always a pleasure to work with him. We are now working on various innovative projects with other talented designers but I can’t say much more… Stay tuned!
