The next edition of the unique design event is coming to Taipei on October 8 – 12.
In bed With Designers played host to buyMeDesign’s Spot Design Award 2014. The Spot Design Award seeks out and celebrates unique, innovative, and compelling pieces of design by rising talents. All of the exhibiting designers were in the running for the coveted prize. Esteemed judges from the design industry picked through the hoard of fashion, furniture, accessories, and lighting design that filled the hotel’s rooms to nominate their favourite pieces.
Judges included renowned industrial designer Michael Young, designer Jovana Bogdanovic from Pinwu design studio in Hangzhou. CEO of Indesign Media Asia Pacific Raj Nandan. Arnault Castel who owns Kapok design stores in Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. Moore Chen, founder and director of Hei interiors. Grace Wang of Very Very Good design shops, restaurants and hotels in Taipei. Sandrine Barbeaux a Belgian art consultant. Carsten Lima, Area Director for Design Hotels. Iko In, founder of InPublishers in Malaysia. The jury was headed by Daniel Jeffreys, CEO of Deluxewords and owner of a number of design publications in the region.
Intense debate over the judges’ nominations led to a decision on three final designs. Greek designer Eleana Katsira presented her rope necklace, and explained how it is inspired by the sea. Manuel Silva and Clara Brito of Lines Lab presented their hand-created clay lamp, Miramics. Each piece is totally unique, and in some cases you can even see the crafter’s fingerprints.
It was Swedish jewelry designer Malin Ohlsson’s silver neckpiece that took the prize of Spot Design Award 2014. Ohlsson’s neckpiece is constructed from 180 separate pieces, each individually cast and polished by hand. The inspiration for the piece came from crocheting created by her grandmother, and each neckpiece takes a total of 20 hours to create by hand.
As winner, Ohlsson was presented with a beautiful Limited Edition Yun Vase by Jovana Bogdanovic from Pinwu. Carsten Lima of Design Hotels presented a two night stay at the STRAF design hotel in Milan, a perfect opportunity for Milan Salone. Florence Coirier, founder of buyMeDesign, awarded a certificate and a year on the buyMeDesign platform offering retail opportunities and media coverage thanks to our design partners, TL mag, IndesignLive, Cubes magazine, Square Foot magazine, in Publishers, Creative Home, Eat Stay Love, and Milk Magazine.
Two more Spot Design Awards were presented after the event. The People’s Choice Award was decided by social media, with the event hashtag #spotdesign. The most popular designer, with many photos, shares, and likes, was Dienastie and their hip eyewear. They too receive a Yun vase.
Visitors to the event were not left out of the chance to win an award with the final trophy going to the Top Spotter. Vincent Law, who runs the blog binzento.com, was decided as the winner, for his #spotdesign throughout the weekend. We particularly liked this beautiful photo of the special edition Fragmented Chronicles French Kiss ring by Shannnam.
We also very much appreciated the designers’ own entries into the #spotdesign award. Check out these two entries from Pinwu and Jonas Design. Pesky.
